According to a US Department of Agriculture statistical bulletin, 80% of the agricultural land in the US is used to raise animals. Time Magazine reports that we feed 70% of the grains and cereals grown in the US to livestock. This is very ineffective because most of the feed gets wasted and only a small amount of the protein is converted to flesh. Animals require many times more calories - in forms of grain, soybean, oats, and corn - then they return in the form of meat. _ The FAO reports that livestock now use 30% of the Earth's entire land surface - mostly permanent pasture, but also including 33% of the global arable land, which is used to produce feed for livestock. The University of Chicago notes that raising animals for food requires 10 times as many crops as we would need if we just ate the grains directly. If we were not using all that land to grow crops to fatten chickens, pigs, and cows, we could reforest millions of acres in the US alone. Or, we could use the grain that are not wasted on livestock to feed all the starving people in the world many times over. _ It takes up to 13 lb of grain to produce 1 lb of meat. Read that line again. Now imagine taking 12 lb of food and throwing it into the garbage. Seems wasteful? Because it is. _ While 60% of the grain grown is fed to farmed animals to produce a small amount of meat... Millions of people who could have eaten that grain died of starvation from a lack of food. _ This year, five million people will die because they didn't have enough to eat.
