Had an incredible time at the world premiere of Hari Kondabolu's documentary "The Problem with Apu". Thoughtful, compelling, intelligent film about South Asian representation in the media, racist caricatures, and how they fuel biases. Congrats to @harikondabolu for a brilliant film and speaking on a topic that has gone ignored by the majority of us non-South Asians. The film airs on @trutv on November 19 at 10pm. . . . . . . . . #nyc
Me unable to stop laughing long enough to take this picture with @HariKondabolu after his conversation with Aisha on @SlateRepresent. . . Click @SlateRepresent's bio link to listen to their conversation on #TheProblemWithApu.
@Regranned from @punitarice - "So let's discuss The Simpsons. #TheSimpsons was a groundbreaking show that mocks people from all walks of life, but other portrayals don’t hinge on a racist depiction of the character. Two years before I came to this country, another South Asian had arrived: Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the popular Simpsons character who runs the local Kwik-E-Mart and gleefully rips everyone off, and informed SO MANY PEOPLE'S perceptions of what Indians are (and how best to mock them). Many have talked about the more obvious ways Apu has perpetuated dangerous ideas about South Asian Americans, but less discussed is how he has embodied and perpetuated the pervasive & damaging #ModelMinority myth. Apu manages to embody two pervasive stereotypes—he is at once an annoying convenience store owner, ready to be laughed at and mocked, and a nerdy geek aligned with the #modelminoritymyth, ready to be pigeonholed and overlooked. Ahead of the release of @harikondabolu's documentary #TheProblemwithApu, which comes out this weekend on @trutv, I got to write about why my problem with Apu is reflective of an actual issue in society for The Establishment (@the_estblshmnt). Link in my Twitter if you're interested." - #regrann
