The first picture here depicts the field where the three Horsa Gliders carrying Major John Howard and his men of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry landed on D-Day. Each stone pillar marks the exact spot where they landed. The second picture shows where Major John Howard’s Horsa Glider landed along with Lt. Den Brotheridge (believed to be the first casualty of D-Day) and 28 other men. The third picture shows the exact spot where the second Horsa Glider carrying Lt. R.A. Smith and 28 other soldiers landed. This glider cracked in half throwing some of the men into the field. The fourth picture shows the exact spot where the third Horsa Glider carrying Lt. D.J. Wood and 28 other soldiers landed. One of the soldiers ended up getting thrown into the pond next to the memorial and drowned. Some argue that this man was the first casualty of D-Day and not Lt. Brotheridge. The fifth and final picture shows the pond where the soldier from the third glider was thrown in and drowned. Very sad that this man, who went through rigorous training for months, died before he got a chance to prove himself. It’s stories like that that happened all over D-Day that morning. Whether from the beaches where men were gunned down before they could even exit their landing crafts to being blown out of the sky before the American paratroopers had a chance to jump. So much wasted youth was spent before they even got a chance to fight. But were they truly wasted? The answer is no. Their sacrifices eventually allowed their comrades to pick up where they left off and carry on their torch to liberate the world of evil and oppression. And it all started with men like the one who drowned unexpectedly in that pond in the very early hours of D-Day, very far from home. #dday #normandy #france #6thairbornedivision #britishheroes #britishparatroopers #ww2 #worldwar2 #thesecondworldwar #orneriver #mayweneverforget #heros #history #historic

I am standing at the entrance of Pegasus Bridge where Lt. Den Brotheridge, followed closely by his men, entered the bridge and fired what is believed to be the first shots of D-Day. The small red poppy wreaths that you see on the right hand side of the bridge is where Brotheridge was shot and killed becoming the first casualty of D-Day. The second picture was taken further down the bridge looking at the entrance from behind. #normandy #dday #france #6thairborne #ltdenbrotheridge #neverforget #britishhero #history #historic #historical

This roundabout (then a T-intersection) was the spot where Sgt. Thornton, apart of Howard’s D Company 2nd Platoon of the British 6th Airborne Division, managed to pull off the luckiest shot of D-Day. By mid 0200, the Germans lead a tank counterattack that was coming down the road in the upper left. Howard's men were greatly outnumbered and had no antitank weapons except for a small little PIAT gun that only had one round. Howard ordered Thornton to get to the intersection to try and hold off the attack. Thornton took the PIAT gun and waited for the first German tank to get close. He fired the gun and managed a direct hit taking out the lead tank. This convinced the Germans that the British had efficient men and weapons capable of taking out their tanks. The German tankers turned around and fled the scene. Thornton managed to stop the German tank counterattack in one single shot saving his men back in Pegasus Bridge, and quite possibly (with great debate) D-Day itself. Visiting this exact spot that I’ve read so much about was very surreal. To be standing in the same spot where history was decided gives you a feeling that is indescribable, but leaves you feeling proud and grateful that men like Thornton existed so we can have a tomorrow. #johnhoward #british6thairborne #6thairborne #britishhero #luckyshot #ww2 #worldwar2 #thesecondworldwar #airborne #france #normandy #dday

Pegasus Bridge was built in 1934 and also known as the Bénouville Bridge after the neighbouring village, it was a major objective of the British airborne troops during Operation Deadstick, part of Operation Tonga in the opening minutes of the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944 during WWII. . . . . #france #normandy #Europe #travel #TFLers #vacation #visiting #instatravel #instago #instagood #holiday #photooftheday #fun #travelling #tourism #instapassport #instatraveling #mytravelgram #travelgram #travelingram #igtravel #building #Nomad #DigitalNomad #instapic #instagram #normandie
