I was grocery shopping with my son when I told a woman “No, thank you.” in response to her offer to help my son carry his bags. ____ But to back the story up. My son and I had been going through a little battle around the home that every parent is familiar with... the “do what I ask, without whining” battle. ____ On this particular day, I had purchased 2 bags of groceries and some flowers for a sick friend. Trying to prevent the flowers from being smushed, I carried them along with one bag and had my son carry the other, well within his capability, bag. Can you guess what happened? ____ Oh, the tears and complete AGONY! He heaved, raising the bag, only to drop it to the ground again. It was as if I’d asked him to move a small boulder! He continued with short tugs as he pulled... pulled... puuuuuuulled the bag towards the exit. ____ It was at this time that a lovely woman, who’d taken notice of my son’s pain, politely asked if she could carry his bag for him. My son’s face shined with a glimmer of hope. “No.” I responded. “We’ve got it.” I could tell by her face, my son had succeeded in his goal of portraying the victim who deserved both pity and interventional aid. Well, NOT today! ____ I continued to walk out the door while my son followed. He then did something that changed everything for him. He swung the bag over his shoulder... I looked at his face and saw him smile up at me, “Hey, it’s easy like this!” ____ Sometimes, when life’s moments get tough to carry, it’s the perfect reminder for us to stop, calm down, and think.
